The potential impacts of local ocean warming on marine fishes are currently limited to a few laboratory studies and a few local field studies. However, the combination of local ocean warming and vertical structures has not been investigated. The present study aimed to evaluate the combined effects of vertical structures (e.g., fish-proof nets) and elevated temperatures on the physiology of marine fishes. The study was conducted in January 2012 at the mouth of Incheon Bay (Korea). Three seawater temperatures (T; 10.3, 12.8, and 15.2 °C) and two light levels (L; 23 and 13.5 L∙m-2) were combined with three artificial vertical structures (a combination of cage and net). The study period consisted of a 72 h exposure of seawater and the following 24 h recovery period. It was found that fishes were not affected by the combination of elevated temperatures and vertical structures at the swimming speeds that they are exposed to in the natural environment. Fish length, wet mass, and temperature, but not the swimming speed, increased with increased temperature. Elevated temperatures reduced the rate of energy storage in the form of carbohydrate and lipid, but did not reduce total energy expenditure. The present study revealed the condition of marine fishes at a local ocean warming event. However, the relationships between fish physiology and seawater temperatures and light levels are species-specific.
